Our Approach
The YMCA day camps welcome all children and families, fostering an environment where everyone belongs. We take a strengths-based, interest-driven approach to support each camper’s well-being. We believe in their abilities and create experiences that encourage growth, dignity, and meaningful opportunities to take risks in a safe and supportive space. Our camps embrace inclusivity, diversity, and representation, fostering a welcoming and meaningful experience for all.

How do we demonstrate inclusion and integration?
Integration is demonstrated by welcoming a camper to camp and ensuring their smooth transition into summer camp life. Inclusion at the YMCA day camps is represented by all the extra and necessary steps to include a camper, such as adapting activities, using a variety of facilitation techniques, etc. Our team takes the time to help support a camper’s every need so they feel included, have opportunities to grow, and can enjoy a positive experience at camp.

What our inclusive approach looks like at camp?
Our inclusive approach can be seen at camp in many different ways:
- Doing our best to hire diverse role models for our campers;
- Using gender neutral language in our communications and when addressing groups;
- At camp, and also within our communities, we actively demonstrate our support for individuals who must contend with systemic racism;
- When possible, providing additional support or tools to campers who may have challenges adapting to a situation or regulating their feelings;
- Integrating universal design principles during camp programming sessions.
Additionally, our Companion Program has played an essential role in supporting YMCA day camps in demonstrating and developing a more inclusive approach each summer.

Our Companion Program
At YMCA day camps, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every child receives the support they need. While we are not a camp that specializes in children with higher behavioural support needs, we offer additional services to accommodate all campers, including those with diverse needs, ensuring they can fully participate and thrive within a camp setting.
A typical day at camp:
- meet companion at 9 a.m.
- participate in camp circle
- camper introduces themselves to their group
- Camper is welcomed and encouraged into the group and participates in activities planned by their counsellors
- Companion observes, adjusts games to campers’ abilities and interests, based on a 1:1 or 1:2 companion to camper ratio
Campers can request breaks away from the group due to sensory needs.
