Children’s Swimming Lessons: How to Choose the Right Level?

Choosing the right swimming level for your child depends on both their age and their comfort in the water. YMCA children’s swimming lessons are structured by age and level to ensure safe progression adapted to every young swimmer.

Between the different levels and skills, it is not always easy to know where to begin.

Good news: it is not necessary to know everything to make the right choice. By understanding the main learning stages and key benchmarks, you will be able to easily register your child in a class adapted to their needs, their pace, and their comfort in the water.

Why Choosing the Right Swimming Level for Your Child Is Essential

Ensuring Water Safety

Water safety is at the heart of learning swimming. A child registered in the right level will develop essential reflexes to stay at the surface, float, and react in unexpected situations, especially in deep water.

Supporting Appropriate Progression

Each child evolves at their own pace. A level that is too easy can lead to boredom, while a level that is too advanced can create stress or discouragement. The right swimming level allows for gradual learning while consolidating each skill.

Developing Confidence and Comfort in the Water

Feeling confident in the water is a key step. By progressing in an adapted environment, your child develops water independence and enjoys learning, which supports long-term motivation.

How to Know Which Swimming Class to Register Your Child In

Based on Your Child’s Age

Classes are generally structured according to age:

  • Under 3: preschool classes with parents and children to discover the water
  • Ages 3 to 5: basic learning (floating, moving, kick) through games adapted to this age group
  • Ages 6 to 15: complete progression, from beginner level to improvement of swimming techniques such as the front crawl and back crawl, as well as endurance and distance

Age is a good starting point, but it is not enough on its own.

Based on Their Skills in the Water

Ask yourself a few simple questions:

  • Does your child agree to put their head in the water?
  • Can your child float on their back or front on their own?
  • Is your child able to move independently over a short distance?

These benchmarks help better determine their actual swimming level.

Signs Your Child Is Ready to Start

Even without experience, a child can begin if they are curious, comfortable in an aquatic environment, and ready to participate. Swimming lessons are designed to support first experiences gently.

Swimming Lessons for Toddlers (Under 3)

Preschool with Parent – Splasher

6 to 18 months

These 30-minute classes allow for a first gentle immersion in a safe environment. With a parent, the baby discovers the pool through games and simple movements.

The baby learns to:

  • feel comfortable and enjoy the water
  • become familiar with the pool (entry, exit, routines, get out of the water)
  • accept having their face wet and begin immersion with bubbles
  • try to float on the front and back with help
  • move in the water with support (games, kick, arm movements, use of legs)

At this stage, the baby discovers the pool and develops a positive relationship with the water.

What Swimming Level Should You Choose for Your Child

If your child is not comfortable in the water or has never taken swimming lessons, choose a beginner level adapted to their age.

Registering Your Child in Swimming Lessons

No matter their level, the important thing is to start. YMCA instructors support each child at their own pace, in a safe and motivating environment.

Evaluation and Progress Tracking

Throughout YMCA swimming lessons, instructors observe your child’s progress to ensure they are evolving in a level adapted to their skills and pace.

At the second-to-last or last class, you will receive a postcard with a QR code leading to SwimGen, along with your child’s ID number. With this number, you can access your child’s progress record (carnet de progrès) online, including:

  • instructor feedback
  • skills practiced
  • evaluation indicating whether the level is completed or not
