Need some motivation? We’re here for you!

YMCAs of Québec - February 09 2018

As everybody knows, January resolutions tend to lose steam by February… But your Y is there to help you stay the course and reach your goals! We know you can do it with a little advice from the pros.

Keep things interesting

Running on a treadmill or lifting weights can be very effective, but it’s not for everyone. Take advantage of the variety of fun activities that your centre offers and have something new to look forward to each morning. Relaxing yoga, exciting Zumba, energizing basketball… Your membership includes access to group classes, the gym, the conditioning room and the pool, so you can try a new activity every day! What will be your new passion?

One goal at a time

Sometimes less is more. This can be true about change! Many new members start wanting to get back into shape, lose weight, eat better, drink more water, stop smoking, and learn to meditate all at once! Instead, choose one simple and realistic goal, like eating at least four different kinds of vegetables a day, and focus on that goal every day for a month. Then add another one for the next month. You’ll be surprised to see how many goals you will achieve by next New Year’s Day!

Ask for help

We bet that when you learned how to drive, an instructor or your parent helped you out. Or when you learned how to multiply or use Excel. The same goes with physical activity! Working out is not a given; you have to learn how to do it. The best way to learn how to exercise effectively without injuring yourself is by asking a professional for help! Most of our memberships include free meetings with a certified instructor who will teach you about the conditioning room and create a personalized program for you. Plus, conditioning room staff members are always there to answer your questions, show you how to use equipment and encourage you. And to make even more progress or to reach very specific goals, ask about our private training plans.

Bring a friend

It’s a well-known fact that working out with a friend or a loved one is more motivating and beneficial. Use your guest passes to bring your friends to your favourite activities, to show your partner just how far you’ve come, or to challenge your colleagues to try something new! Who knows—maybe you’ll become regular workout buddies!

No matter how small, all achievements should be celebrated. You did two more push-ups last week? You just finished your first cycling class? Post it on Facebook! Make yourself a T-shirt! Treat yourself! You deserve it!

But above all else, remember what brought you to the Y in the first place, or what made you put on your running shoes and come to the Y. There’s where your true motivation lies. It’s the spark that made you say I can do this.
