Become a lifeguard through courses offered at the YMCA.
Free aquatic certifications
In 2022, the latest government announcement on the promotion of sports and physical and recreational activities in Québec put forth an initiative that aims to offer free access to swim instructor and lifeguard certification courses.
With the current labour shortages, we welcome this initiative, which promotes access and learning for young people, with open arms.
Registration for the winter session will take place on December 11 starting at 7:00 a.m.
Here are the courses that will be offered for free* :
- Bronze Medallion
- Bronze Cross
- National Lifeguard
- Swim Instructor
* Please note that any fees for pocket masks, whistles, and other personal items are at the participant’s expense.
Swimming and water safety instruction has been one of the pillars of the YMCA, with over 80 years of experience in this area. Swimmers interested in becoming a lifeguard can participate in the Lifesaving Society’s certifications offered at the YMCA.
Benefits of lifesaving courses
- Psychological: stress management, improved focus and self-esteem;
- Fitness: weight management and increased cardiovascular capacity, strength and endurance;
- Motor skills: improved coordination, balance, posture and agility.
