Jennifer (Cactus), Day Camp Director
Has been working at YMCA day camps since: 2018
Field of study:
Recreational Studies, Communications, Human Relations (BA)
Cool past job:
I worked at the McGill Conservatory Day Camp for 14 camp seasons before joining the YMCA team!
When did you know that you were a camp person?
When I realized that I was being criticized in my academic life for things I was being praised for in my camp life!
What's your favourite word? Sparkle!
What you are looking forward to doing this summer at camp?
Discovering the uniqueness of each of our camps, helping amazing staff members to be even better and helping our great programming to be known and recognized by everyone!
Pet phrase: Why not coconut!
Marc-Olivier (Obélix), Programming and training advisor
Has been working at the YMCA day camps since: 2023 (My camp name dates to almost 20 years).
Field of study: Bachelors in leisure science at Concordia University.
What are you looking forward to doing this summer at camp? Laugh! I think my enthusiasm is contagious and I love seeing the kids and other counsellors smile. That’s a key element for a great summer at camp.
What thematic day that you participated in left the biggest mark? As a very nostalgic person, I love looking back at past themes. I have to say though, I cherish the Harry Potter one where the counsellors dressed up as Hogwarts professors and the campers were the students of wizardry and witchcraft. We did it all: the sorting hat ceremony, a Quidditch tournament, 4 large tables in the dining hall, prefects with badges … you get the gist.
My 6 meditations in life: Cooking, running, reading, cycling, playing guitar, and hiking in the woods.
Jolysza Snagg-Romeo (Ignite), Companion Program Manager, Behavior Manager and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and belonging
Time at the Y: I have been working at the YMCA Day Camps since 2021.
Field of study: BA in Recreation and Leisure.
What do you like about camp life?
Camp life gives me the freedom to embrace my differences, conquer challenges and help others grow intentionally. Camp life continuously allows me to accept all kinds of changes with grace and an open mind. What’s better than having a job that allows you to grow professionally and personally?
Favourite quote: Be the light you wish to see in the world.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I enjoy most about my job is representing my community and helping others grow outside of their comfort zone. I like creating spaces where everyone feels heard, safe and encouraged to reach their full potential, while finding their gifts and their place in the world.
Words of encouragement: Do not let the prejudice of the world make you feel lonely, as it is okay to be different and to find peace and solidarity in this. Be brave. Grow confidently and gracefully into what makes you unique.
Mariana (Clémentine), Administrative assistant to the direction - Day camps and Daycares
Has been working at the YMCA day camps since: About 10 years.
Field of study: Education.
What do you like about camp life? The energy, the atmosphere, the people, teamwork.
Favourite quote: “Education is to give wings to fly and roots to come back.”
What do you enjoy most about your job? Working towards having the children accomplish their full development in a joyful and safe environment.
Words of encouragement: Put love in everything you do.
Angelina (Bubbles), Educational Coordinator
Has been working at the YMCA day camps since: YMCA Québec since 2021, summers 2018 and 2019 with YMCA of Greater Toronto.
Field of study: Psychology and education, focus in childhood cognitive development.
When did you know that you were a camp person?
This field allows me to observe and apply my academic knowledge to real-life experiences. At camp we see friendships sparked, skills developed and true growth for the campers, staff and families. I can’t imagine finding my passion for developmental psychology and behavioural interventions without my rich experiences as a day camp coordinator.
One fun fact you can’t help but share: I was a dancer for 18 years and taught for 2!
What are you looking forward to doing this summer at camp?
Constantly looking for improvement! Between ensuring real, connected relations within our camp communities and improving the quality of our programming through intentional resources, the best part is seeing it through, and keep moving forward!
Favourite camp tradition: Camp Magic Hogwarts Day: we host a mini Halloween at camp to celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday mid-summer. :)
