Local Advisory Councils

What is a LAC?

A LAC provides advice and recommendations to the Director of each centre to support his or her duties. Mainly, the LAC:
encourages the full and complete participation of partner members in matters that are of particular interest to the centre;
provides the Association with a volunteer decision-making body that can help the centre’s employees fulfill their mandate;
provides the Association with a volunteer decision-making body that ensures the activities and services of the Association reflect the realties of the community it serves.

How does a LAC work?

A centre’s Local Advisory Council must reflect the internal and external realities of the community it serves. Each LAC must determine the number of partner members required to achieve a balanced representation of members, users and community representatives. To become a member of a LAC, you must first be a partner member of the Association. Each LAC meets at least once every three months (a minimum of 4 times per year).

How to become a member of a Local Advisory Council?

If you are interested in becoming a member of Local Advisory Council, write an email to the Director of the YMCA centre in question explaining why you would like to be on the council. Usually, a Local Advisory Council will post available positions on the centre’s bulletin board.
