The YMCAs of Québec Contribute to the City of Montréal’s First Policy on Sports & Physical Activity

The YMCAs of Québec -

On November 12, Dimitrios (Jim) Beis, mayor of Pierrefonds-Roxboro and member of the city of Montréal’s Executive Committee, whose responsibilities include Procurement, Sports and Leisure, and Cultural Communities, announced that the Executive Committee adopted its first Sports and Physical Activity Policy for the city of Montréal.

“Montréal is a physically active city, an Olympic city and a world-renowned sports tourism destination. The Sports and Physical Activity Policy reaffirms Montréal’s position as a leader. The policy will help us rethink the development of our city, and, ultimately, ensure that people become healthier and more active,” said Beis.

This policy stems from the city’s desire to create supportive environments that promote physical activity and encourage people living in or travelling around Montréal to become and stay physically active. Several citizens and partners, including The YMCAs of Québec, which participated in the 2012-2013 public consultation and in the Montréal, Physically Active Summit in spring 2014, all helped shape the development of the policy.

Guidelines and priorities for action

The policy’s guidelines and priorities for action touch on sports, physical activity, land development, spaces that foster well-being, active transportation, parks, green spaces, the environment, social mobilization and active design.

These guidelines and priorities for action are centered on:

  1. Developing community spaces that promote physical activity;
  2. Making active transportation and urban outdoor activities more accessible;
  3. Encouraging participation in sports and sporting events;
  4. Promoting physically active lifestyles.

“By continuing to join forces with our partners, we will be able to achieve the objective set out by the World Health Organization of reducing physical inactivity by 10% on the island of Montréal. I invite the partners and their organizations to officially adopt this policy as well as its guidelines and priorities for action,” said Beis.

Beis also thanked all the partners in the environmental, transportation, health, educational, municipal, business, community, and sports and recreation sectors that participated in the Montréal, Physically Active Summit and in the development of this Sports and Physical Activity Policy as well as its guidelines and priorities for action.

The Sports and Physical Activity Policy, as well as its guidelines and priorities for action, are available online, in French only, at ville.montreal.qc.ca/sports. The policy document also includes a list of all the partners involved in the Montréal, Physically Active movement.
