Volunteer Mentor, YMCA Plusone Mentoring

POSITION OVERVIEW

Interested in mentoring a youth in your community?

As a volunteer mentor for the Plusone Mentoring program, your leadership, passion, adaptability and, most importantly, your ability to bond with youth, will be indispensable assets. Through these, you will develop a trusting and positive relationship with a youth that will allow you to best support them in confronting current and future challenges in their lives.

Throughout the program, the mentor collaborates with, and is supported by, a trained and qualified youth worker.

The relationship between the mentor and the youth last for a full year, during which the two meet once a week in order to participate in the activities of their choice at their local YMCA. The match between the mentor and the youth is founded on shared common interests, which facilitates the development of strong relationships.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Completes the YMCA Plusone Mentoring training program for mentors.
  • Commits to volunteering in the program as a mentor for a period of at least 1 year.
  • Meets their mentee once or twice a week, for a total of 2 to 3 hours.
  • In collaboration with the program Support Worker, assists in the development of an individualized action plan for their mentee.
  • Based on the action plan for their mentee, accompanies and/or connects the youth participant to relevant YMCA or external community resources and services.
  • Is a positive role model for their mentee and upholds high ethical standards for themselves at all times
  • Meets regularly (at least once every 2 months, or as needed) with the program Support Worker to discuss the mentoring relationship, track progress, seek support and advice, etc.
  • Adheres to the YMCA Code of Conduct, and the YMCA Protecting Children, Youth and Vulnerable Adults Policy and Procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • ≥ 18 years old.
  • Have experience working with youth (10 – 17 years of age) and/or be capable of quickly developing positive relationships with them.
  • Have work or volunteer experience in a helping field (e.g. teaching, youth work, social work, etc.) - an asset.
  • Fluent in French or English
  • Have availabilities in the afternoon and early evenings.
  • Have no criminal record in connection with the volunteering position.

  • Location: YMCA West Island, Cartierville, du Parc & NDG

  • Schedule: 1 meeting of 2-3 hours per week (evenings and/or week-ends)
