The YMCAs of Québec – July 25, 2024
The 2024 Camp YMCA Kanawana Pip Award was given to physician and humanitarian Dr. James Orbinsky for his commitment and contribution to society and the scientific world.
In fact, this commitment begins with Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which leads him to work in situations of war, intense famines, epidemics and even genocide.
Elected President of the MSF International Council from 1998 to 2001, he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to MSF “in recognition of the organization’s pioneering humanitarian work on several continents”.
Also a best-selling author, Orbinsky is currently a professor and the inaugural Director of York University’s Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research.
He was honoured during a ceremony at Camp YMCA Kanawana, making him the 15th recipient of the Pip Award.
About the Pip Award
Created in 2007, this award is given annually to a former Camp YMCA Kanawana camper or employee who best exemplifies the values of selflessness and contribution to the community. It was named in honour of Philip “Pip” Caddell (1913–2004), a Second World War officer, Montréal executive and community volunteer, and his grandson, James Caddell (1973–2005), a UN peacekeeper and public servant. Both are former members of the camp, as are the individuals in the Pip Award Committee.
