Attendant, Integrated Recreation

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the coordinator of Integrated Recreations the volunteer pro-vides support to a person with an intellectual disability and/or a Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a Trisomy 21, a dysphasia and a visual or hearing impairment, to help him or her participate in physical and recreational activities at the YMCA. S/he enables the participant to become familiar with the layout of the centre and the people who work there, and also informs participant of the behavioural expectations and the basic information need-ed to participate in the activity selected. Over time, the program participant will feel confident enough to participate independently in his or her activities at the YMCA.

RESPONSABILITIES

  • Listens to, makes self available, and develops a friendly and trusting relationship with a person with an intellectual disability and/or a sensory or learning disability.
  • Creates a safe and welcoming environment for the participant.
  • Facilitates interaction and conversation between the participant, other YMCA clients and the employees.
  • Actively participates in the activities in an effort to foster the inclusion of the participant.
  • Fosters the autonomy of the participant and develops his or her self-esteem.
  • Maintains open communication with the program manager and reports any complaints.
  • Informs the program manager of any absences.
  • Understands the intervention protocols in the event of an emergency as well as the procedures for the accident and evacuations reports.
  • Adheres to the YMCA Child and Vulnerable Adults Protection.
  • Understands and integrates the value of philanthropy in the position and Association, and participates in the Annual Campaign and/or other fundraising events.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be aged 16 and up.
  • Fluent in French or English.
  • Must enjoy working with people with disabilities.
  • Available at least once per week.
  • CPR certification (an asset).
  • Respect diversity.
  • Have no criminal record in connection with the employment.
