2023

Isolated fire at the YMCAs of Québec’s Summer Camp Kanawana. No impact on the 2023 camp season.

Montréal, May 16, 2023A fire started early this morning at Camp Kanawana, located in Saint-Sauveur and owned by charitable organization the YMCAs of Québec. There were no injuries reported and according to municipal authorities the natural environment remains intact.

The site, which has welcomed generations of young campers for close to 130 years, has nonetheless suffered property damage: the camp managers’ cabin, which was unoccupied at the time, was completely destroyed by the flames, despite the best efforts of firefighters and their quick arrival on the scene. This cabin is isolated from the rest of the camp facilities, which will therefore not impact the site’s normal operations.

As summer is right around the corner and the big volunteer clean-up event is scheduled for May 26 to May 28, please rest assured that the welcome and safety of campers will not be affected in any way and camp will start as planned on June 26.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. Representatives from the YMCAs of Québec are collaborating with investigators to determine how the fire started. The YMCAs of Québec’s Customer Service Department is available to answer any questions regarding 2023 Camp Kanawana activities. You can contact Customer Service by email at contact@ymcaquebec.org or by telephone at 1-833-505-9622 (outside Montréal) or 514-687-9622 (Montréal).
