Job Readiness Service - La Boussole

Finding work is never easy when you’ve just come out of prison. For twenty-one years, La Boussole has offered free services for persons with a criminal record to help them re-integrate into the work force or return to school. Its clientele is made up mainly of men who have been imprisoned in a provincial or federal detention centre. La Boussole offers them preparatory job training, integrates them into a job search group, and provides them with information and training, as well as individual supervision throughout their quest.

When they register, participants establish a plan of action that addresses their situation and needs. Next, participants receive training to help them acquire the tools they need to look for work, such as building résumés, interview preparation, and basic knowledge of labour standards. They receive computer training so they can develop basic skills in using common programs. Twice a week, participants gather in a job search group to look at websites, newspapers, and trade directories, and to use computers and fax machines. At these meetings participants help one another and keep one another motivated.

Sport is also a part of the training, and participants can also make use of the Downtown Y centre sports facilities free of charge at certain times of the day. The job readiness service also organizes several side events, such as art competitions, a Christmas dinner, a job fair at the detention centre, workshops at the Maison du Père shelter, etc.

By providing a structured framework for its clients, La Boussole supports them in their search for employment.
