The Downtown Y centre
Where it all began!
In 1851, when the Y first opened in Montreal, it was the first YMCA centre in North America. Sixty years later, the Y found its permanent home on Stanley Street, in the heart of the action, across from the metro and a stone’s throw from St. Catherine, the busiest street in Montreal.
Projects at the core of the community
Today, the Downtown Y centre plays a vital role in the community. It strives to resolve local issues in cooperation with many different organizations. For example, the Tandem and Dialogue programs, which greatly improve urban safety and help the homeless, represent a model for success in the community. The centre also supports workforce reintegration and employability programs for young offenders, heads of families and young people. There is a Youth Zone, as well as activities aimed at empowering youth, families, immigrants, seniors and marginalized people. The Y also runs a daycare centre and a day camp, and provides financial support to low-income families.
The Downtown Y centre is very proud of its modern and varied sports facilities and the many different classes it offers to the thousands of people who live or work downtown. Staying fit is the cornerstone for better overall health and a community that is in better shape.
The Downtown Y centre enjoys the outstanding support of nearly 150 volunteers and numerous donors. More than 25,500 people use its programs and services every year.
