Camp Counsellor Training Program (DAFA)

Our Camp Counsellor Training Program gives young people ages 15 to 25 a chance to develop the knowledge and the skills they need to become day camp or summer camp counsellors or to work in a similar field (like child care). Participants who complete the program receive a Diplôme d'aptitude aux fonctions d'animateur (DAFA).

The YMCA, an organization with a great deal of experience in operating day camps and summer camps, also trains staff for day camps that are managed by other organizations in the Montréal area.

Most of our counsellors-in-training are referred to the program by their future employers and must successfully complete the program to meet the conditions of their employment.

The training program consists of:

  • 33 hours of group training, including lectures and workshops;
  • a 35-hour internship.

The program also includes a section on working with people with special needs. This program is offered at the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve YMCA.
