A new physical literacy program presented by Manulife

YMCAs of Québec - February 09 2018

In keeping with our mission to help children, young people and families lead healthy and active lives, we are proud to have a new Physical Literacy program in our day camps this year that promotes physical activity for young people.

This program gives young participants’ the physical skills, knowledge and motivation to confidently participate in all kinds of sports and physical activities. Thanks to a major donation from Manulife, we are launching this program in our day camps this summer.

In a sense, physical literacy is the ABCs of physical activity. This means that day camp counsellors will be specially trained to reinforce a few fundamental movements through play, such as throwing a ball, running or jumping. They will also be encouraged to use strategies to help children improve their self-confidence and motivation and to discuss the importance of healthy life habits. This way, camp will allow kids to participate in fun activities that give them tools they need to stay active for life.

To ensure that this new program is a success, the YMCAs of Québec has hired Tina Tran, who has already 10 years of experience with promoting healthy habits. Holding a Master’s degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in physical activity promotion, she also has worked on physical literacy projects with the Shape Up Foundation and was in charge of promoting physically active lifestyles at the Université de Montréal, HEC Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal. We are convinced that her expertise and enthusiasm will have a positive impact on the whole program.
